Baku Initiative Group publishes figures on 1984 anti-Sikh violence in India PHOTO

05 January 2026 17:20

The Baku Initiative Group (BIG) has published figures detailing what it describes as mass killings and repression of Sikhs in India, sharing the data on its social media accounts.

According to information released by the organisation, more than 10,000 members of the Sikh community were killed during widespread violence in 1984, Caliber.Az reports.

BIG says the crackdown also led to the destruction of over 54,000 homes and the forced displacement of more than 207,000 Sikhs from their ancestral lands.

The group characterises the events as systematic violence directed at followers of Sikhism.

Sikhism is a monotheistic religion founded in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent, based on the teachings of Guru Nanak.
