Baku Initiative Group strengthens global partnerships for decolonisation, human rights

01 November 2025 09:13

Executive Director of the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) Abbas Abbasov has stated that cooperation between BIG and its international partners currently continues with more than 17 countries and territories.

In his comments to domestic media, Abbasov emphasised that the number of references to Belgium’s colonial past has notably increased in recent months, revealing evidence of grave and inhumane acts committed during that period. “These were not only colonial crimes but also serious crimes against humanity,” he said.

He underlined that the international community has not paid sufficient attention to the issue and has largely failed to address it. “As BIG, we will continue to raise awareness of the consequences of Belgium’s colonial policy and its obligations regarding reconstruction and reparations at all relevant international platforms,” Abbasov added.

“Currently, our cooperation continues with more than 17 countries and territories. This includes our efforts to bring Belgium’s colonial policy and its reparation commitments to the international agenda,” he said.

The Baku Initiative Group, founded on July 6, 2023, in Baku, is an international non-governmental organisation focused on advancing global partnerships in decolonisation and human rights.

The organisation was established following the conference “Towards the Total Elimination of Colonialism,” held in connection with the Non-Aligned Movement ministerial meeting under Azerbaijan’s chairmanship.

Since its creation, BIG has actively supported freedom and independence movements of nations still living under colonial or neo-colonial domination. Alongside its main mission, the organisation also promotes women’s empowerment, human rights protection, environmental sustainability, and cultural exchange—combining advocacy with tangible action.

Remaining committed to justice and equality, the Baku Initiative Group continues to stand in solidarity with communities across the world still impacted by colonial structures in the 21st century, reaffirming its role as a driving force for decolonisation and international cooperation.
