Baku Initiative Group to hold conference on Sikh human rights in Geneva
The Baku Initiative Group (BIG) will hold an international conference titled "Combating Transnational Repression by the Indian Government: Sikh Resistance and the UN" in Geneva, Switzerland, alongside the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council.
The event will bring together influential representatives of the Sikh diaspora from Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States, as well as individuals who are direct victims of India’s repressive policies, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Conference organisers said discussions will focus on attacks and threats faced by Sikh activists, diaspora organisation leaders, and their families abroad, highlighting concerns over cross-border repression and violations of fundamental human rights.
The conference will examine the serious risks posed by organised attacks in terms of fundamental freedoms and human rights, as well as cross-border pressures directed against diaspora organisations, the organisers stated.
Key topics will include drawing international attention to these abuses, raising the issue of India’s treatment of ethnic minorities within UN forums, strengthening accountability and monitoring mechanisms globally, and documenting cases through UN rapporteurs specialising in cross-border issues and minority rights.
Following the conference, the Baku Initiative Group and the Sikh Federation will present a joint report at the Geneva Press Club, with an opportunity for media representatives to ask questions.
