24 May 2025 09:57

An official reception dedicated to Georgia’s Independence Day was held in Baku on May 23.

The event began with the national anthems of both countries, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

In his remarks at the reception, Georgian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Zurab Pataradze emphasised the special significance of May 26, 1918, in the centuries-old history of Georgian statehood. On that day, the Democratic Republic of Georgia was proclaimed, and the Georgian people’s aspiration to establish an independent, united, and free state became a reality.

Addressing the importance of peace and stability in the region and the world at large, the diplomat reaffirmed the Georgian government’s commitment to the peaceful resolution of conflicts and expressed gratitude to Azerbaijan, a friendly nation and strategic partner, for its continued support.

Chair of the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijan’s Parliament), Sahiba Gafarova, also delivered a speech. She highlighted the long-standing ties of friendship and good neighbourliness between Azerbaijan and Georgia, underlining the high level of bilateral cooperation in the economic and humanitarian spheres.

Gafarova noted that joint energy and transportation projects, as well as socio-humanitarian initiatives carried out in Georgia by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, are strengthening mutual trust between the Azerbaijani and Georgian peoples.

Concluding her remarks, Gafarova voiced confidence in the further development of bilateral cooperation in the service of the prosperity of both nations and wished Georgia peace, stability, and continued success.

The event also featured performances of traditional songs from both Georgia and Azerbaijan. Guests had the opportunity to view an exhibition showcasing Georgian jewellery and national costumes.
