Brazil plans to emulate Azerbaijan’s high-level COP29 organization for COP30 Top official says
Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin has stated that COP29, held in Baku, was organized at a high level, and Brazil plans to draw from Azerbaijan’s experience in preparing for COP30.
Alckmin shared this information with local media, emphasizing that the main topics discussed at COP29 would be revisited and further developed for COP30, Caliber.Az reports.
According to the Vice President, the successful organization of COP29 in Azerbaijan will serve as a model for future events.
“We really like COP29 organized in Azerbaijan. Everything is great here! We are eyeing this forum for next year’s COP in Brazil,” said Sonia Guajajara, Brazil’s Minister of Indigenous Peoples.
She elaborated on Brazil’s environmental challenges: “We are here to protect our territories, to define the boundaries of more local lands, to fight diseases. These are the challenges we face in Brazil. We are fighting climate change, fires, illegal crops, deforestation, and invaders of local lands,” she noted.
COP29, running from November 11 to 22 at Baku Stadium, is Azerbaijan's most significant event to date and marks the first time a COP summit is held in the region. During the event, a Host Country Agreement and other critical documents were signed between the Government of Azerbaijan and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat.
The summit features the high-level World Leaders' Summit on Climate Action, taking place on November 12-13.
The primary aim of COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) related to climate finance. The COP29 Presidency has introduced 14 initiatives linking climate action to the Sustainable Development Goals. These initiatives cover green energy corridors, energy storage, climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane reduction in organic waste, green digital technologies, and more. Establishing a Climate Finance Action Fund is also among the proposed initiatives.
The creation of climate finance is a top priority and is essential to achieving the 1.5°C climate target.
Azerbaijan places significant importance on environmental protection and climate change mitigation, making considerable efforts in these areas. The unanimous election of Azerbaijan as the host for COP29 by the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change underscores the international community's trust and respect for the country. As President Ilham Aliyev remarked, this recognition reflects the global confidence in Azerbaijan.
