Bulgaria, Azerbaijan discuss expanding gas supplies, green energy cooperation

Bulgaria and Azerbaijan have discussed opportunities to deepen energy cooperation, including the potential expansion of Azerbaijani natural gas supplies to Bulgaria and the wider region, according to Bulgaria’s Ministry of Energy.

The discussions took place during a meeting between Bulgarian Energy Minister Iva Petrova and Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Bulgaria, Seymur Mammadov, Caliber.Az reports via local media. 

According to the ministry, the talks focused on increasing natural gas deliveries from the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), as well as advancing cooperation on renewable energy projects and investment opportunities in Bulgaria.

The two sides also reviewed progress on plans to establish green energy corridors linking the Caspian region with Europe, an initiative aimed at strengthening cross-border electricity transmission and supporting the continent’s energy transition.

The Bulgarian Ministry of Energy noted that the energy sector has become one of the cornerstone areas of cooperation since diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and Azerbaijan were established 34 years ago.

In a statement, the ministry highlighted the Green Energy Corridor project, launched in 2024 by Bulgarian President Rumen Radev and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. The project is designed to enhance the transmission and trade of renewable electricity between the Caspian region and Europe.

The ministry added that participants at the third ministerial meeting on the initiative, held in Istanbul on May 22, 2026, discussed accelerating the signing of an intergovernmental agreement on the project’s implementation among the energy ministries of Bulgaria, Azerbaijan, Türkiye, and Georgia.
