Bulgarian PM: Azerbaijani gas supplies to end Russia's monopoly

08 July 2022 19:31

Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov said that the opening of the Greece-Bulgaria Interconnector (IGB) and the Azerbaijani gas supplies through it will put an end to the Russian monopoly.

According to him, the opening of IGB in the Greek city of Komotini is a historic day, Gazeta.ru reported.

"This is a symbol of achieving energy independence. The interconnector is starting to work. I am proud to have led a government under which it was possible to complete this work in just six months," Petkov said.

He also thanked Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Petkov claims that all the work on the IGB and the floating LNG storage and regasification station (FSRU) in Alexandroupolis, as well as the help of the EU and President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, start new geopolitical cooperation, which has practical significance and changes the map of the region. Due to the fact that Bulgaria will start receiving gas from Azerbaijan in the coming weeks, the Russian monopoly will end.
