Chairman of Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Supreme Assembly resigns

21 December 2022 13:45

Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Vasif Talibov has resigned.

He announced his resignation at the Assembly’s extraordinary meeting on December 21, according to APA.

Talibov served as chairman of the Supreme Majlis of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic since December 1995.

In the meantime, a closed session of the Supreme Assembly is being held Nakhchivan. None of the ministers of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is participating in the gathering, according to Qafqazinfo.

Although the officials were not informed about the agenda of the meeting, important decisions regarding Nakhchivan, in addition to the chairman’s departure, are expected to be made.

Caliber.Az recalls, that a string of operations by Azerbaijan's Security Service has been conducted in the southwestern exclave of Azerbaijan, which led to the detaining of several high-ranking officials, including the autonomous republic's finance minister, a department head within the customs agency, and the head of the city planning committee, accused of embezzling government funds.

The Azerbaijani government in Baku has also carried out a series of reforms to the Nakchivani authority hierarchy by disassembling several agencies and launching new structures as part of a campaign to bolster the ties between the state structures in Baku and the autonomous republic's capital, Nakhchivan.
