Chairman: Zangezur Corridor to unlock potential of Turkic world
The Zangezur Corridor, as part of the Middle Corridor, is set to play a crucial role in realising the economic and cultural potential of the Turkic world, according to Binali Yıldırım, Chairman of the Council of Elders of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS)
Speaking at a symposium at Selçuk University in Türkiye, Yıldırım said that opening the route between western Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic would enable the resources and wealth of Turkic nations to be harnessed for the benefit of their peoples, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
“The Zangezur Corridor holds particular significance for the future of the Turkic world,” he said.
Yıldırım also highlighted the current trade figures between OTS countries, noting that the bloc’s intra-Turkic trade stands at just $70 billion, compared with a combined external trade turnover of $1.1 trillion.
The Council head stressed the importance of implementing a unified Turkic alphabet, consisting of 34 letters. “The working arrangements for a common Turkic alphabet have been agreed. The important task now is to put it into practice. This will depend on political will and the determination of individual countries to adopt it. Time is needed,” he said, adding that a common alphabet would allow citizens across OTS countries to read in any Turkic language.
Other key priorities for integration among Turkic states, Yıldırım said, include preparing textbooks on the shared history of the Turkic world, simplifying customs procedures, and developing infrastructure.
