Community chief demands action against Armenia’s deportation of Azerbaijanis
Aziz Alakbarli, a member of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (parliament), Chairman of the Western Azerbaijan Community, and leader of the initiative group advocating for the return to Western Azerbaijan, has urged foreign parliaments to condemn the injustice faced by Azerbaijanis displaced from Armenia.
Alakbarli appealed for a panel discussion titled "Parliamentary Diplomacy in Global Governance" at the 4th Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
He highlighted that the Turkic-Muslim population had been subjected to repeated mass deportations throughout the 20th century, and today, there are no Azerbaijanis left in Armenia.
"During the last wave of deportation between 1987 and 1991, over 300,000 Azerbaijani Turks were expelled from their lands. Our historical monuments and the graves of our ancestors were destroyed. This has caused significant damage to the cultural heritage of all mankind," Alekberli stated.
He further emphasized that the issue of Western Azerbaijan has expanded beyond regional boundaries. "We were displaced as a result of an armed conflict. According to Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone has the right to return to their homeland. However, Armenia is violating this right. At the same time, the official Baku acknowledges the right of Armenians, who once lived in Azerbaijan and held citizenship, to return," he added.
