COP29 CEO: Azerbaijan engaged in 15 key initiatives

08 July 2024 15:46

COP29 Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Elnur Soltanov announced that Azerbaijan is currently discussing 15 initiatives as part of its COP29 chairmanship agenda.

“Azerbaijan may introduce its own initiatives under its COP29 chairmanship. We are discussing about 15 initiatives. I am confident that Azerbaijan will make a significant contribution and set an example for other countries in terms of effectiveness and preparation for COP29,” Soltanov told reporters, Caliber.Az reports citing the local media.

He also noted that negotiations for COP29 are ongoing.

“With less time left until COP29, we must complete more than 50 per cent of our work by November 11 to successfully implement the entire programme. The negotiation process is continuing, and we maintain a neutral position in it. The decisions must be made by other countries,” Soltanov added.

To recap, Baku will host the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

A group of Eastern European countries has chosen Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to host COP29 climate talks next year.

Earlier, Bulgaria withdrew its candidacy to host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in favour of Azerbaijan.

Moreover, Baku and Yerevan agreed to support each other at some international venues. In a joint statement, Armenia said it would support Azerbaijan's bid to host the COP29 summit.

The conference is being held in rotation by five UN regional groups, and Eastern Europe will take part next year.
