03 August 2022 14:42

Azerbaijan's application to join the D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation (Islamic group of eight) is still pending.

The statement came online by the Secretariat of the organisation on August 3, Report informs.

“Azerbaijan is an important country in the world community of nations and has high economic indicators. It is hoped that Azerbaijan will bring its experience and knowledge to the organisation and strengthen it when the organisation makes a final decision on the country's application,” the statement reads.

At the end of July, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, speaking via videoconference at the 20th meeting of the D-8 Ministerial Council in Bangladesh, backed Azerbaijan's application to join the D-8.

The Islamic group of eight (D-8) is an international cooperation development organisation that includes Bangladesh, Egypt, Nigeria, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Türkiye. The decision to establish the organisation was made in November 1996 at the Istanbul Conference titled "Cooperation in Development".
