Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis: FM Bayramov pays tribute to victims Calls for accountability

31 March 2025 10:25

Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister, Jeyhun Bayramov, marked the Day of the Genocide of Azerbaijanis on X page, remembering the victims of the 1918 massacre, where tens of thousands of Azerbaijanis were killed by radical Armenian groups.

In his post, Bayramov stated: "On March 31 – Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis, we honour and remember the tens of thousands of innocent Azerbaijanis who were brutally massacred by radical Armenian groups 107 years ago," Caliber.Az reports.

He also highlighted the ongoing impact of such violence, pointing to the persistence of similar acts against Azerbaijanis.

"The recurrence of such horrific acts by Armenia against innocent Azerbaijanis—ranging from mass deportations, ethnic cleansing, and genocide, to war crimes—underscores the necessity for ending impunity of those responsible for these atrocities," Bayramov added.

To recall, March 31 marks the 107th anniversary of the 1918 genocide against Azerbaijanis, with up to 50,000 victims killed by Armenian forces in various Azerbaijani regions, including Baku, Shamakhi, and Karabakh.

Following the Bolshevik revolution, Armenian and Bolshevik gangs intensified attacks on Azerbaijanis, resulting in widespread killings and atrocities. The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic condemned these actions, establishing an inquiry into the massacre. March 31 was declared a day of national mourning.

A similar tragedy occurred in Khojaly in 1992. The remembrance day was officially recognised in 1998 through a decree by President Heydar Aliyev.
