Deputy PM: Azerbaijan, Russia, and Iran collaborate to boost transit capacity

13 October 2025 12:06

Azerbaijan, Russia, and Iran are actively developing technologies for a multimodal container service along the Western route of the North-South International Transport Corridor, according to Deputy Chairman of the Russian Government, Alexey Overchuk.

He made the remarks during a trilateral meeting of government representatives from Azerbaijan, Iran, and Russia held in Baku, as per domestic media.

Overchuk expressed his gratitude to both Azerbaijan and Iran for organising the meeting and participating with high-level delegations. He emphasised that the success of the Western route depends on coordinated efforts between the three countries.

He noted that the three nations are jointly addressing issues such as increasing the capacity of road checkpoints. “At the end of last year, an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation for the development of transit transportation along the North-South corridor was signed with Azerbaijan. Its main goal is to ensure a stable cargo flow,” Overchuk said.

Regarding Iran, he highlighted progress on the Resht-Astara railroad section, with construction underway since 2023. Satellite measurements and levelling works are being conducted, and results are currently being processed.

Within the framework of the Western route, the rail networks of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Iran are working together to implement multimodal container service technologies, aimed at enhancing efficiency and connectivity along the corridor.

The trilateral meeting in Baku focuses on key areas of cooperation among Azerbaijan, Iran, and Russia, including transport, energy, and customs, highlighting the three countries’ commitment to strengthening regional infrastructure and trade connectivity.
