Detention of Azerbaijanis extended over Northern Cyprus shipwreck

The detention of three Azerbaijani citizens arrested in connection with the shipwreck off the coast of Northern Cyprus has been extended by another seven days.

The three — Rashad Ibrahimov, Gadir Guliyev, and Valeh Humbatov — remain in custody as the investigation into the tragedy continues, Orkhan Hasanoghlu, chairman of the Azerbaijan-Cyprus Friendship Society, told local media.

According to Hasanoghlu, police told the court that investigators have so far taken statements from more than 320 people.

“The investigation is focusing on the technical condition of the vessel, damage to its bow, which occurred on June 17, and the subsequent repair work. It is being determined whether the damage and repairs contributed to the sinking of the vessel. Authorities are also establishing whether the relevant bodies were notified of the repairs and how many voyages the vessel made afterward,” he said.

Hasanoghlu said underwater search operations are ongoing, including efforts to locate the Optimus Prime’s black box and Voyage Data Recorder (VDR).

He added that 17 parts of the vessel recovered from the water and brought ashore are expected to undergo expert examination. Investigators also plan to conduct checks in Türkiye, including at a ship repair facility in Adana.

“The Azerbaijan-Cyprus Friendship Society is monitoring the comprehensive and objective investigation into all causes and circumstances of the tragedy, as well as the protection of the rights of Rashad Ibrahimov, Gadir Guliyev, and Valeh Humbatov. The guilt of the detainees has not been established by a final and legally binding court ruling,” Hasanoghlu said.

The vessel sank off the coast of Kyrenia in Northern Cyprus on August 30. A total of 239 people were rescued, while 15 people have died and 13 others remain missing.

Nine people, including the three Azerbaijani citizens, have been detained in connection with the incident.
