Dmytro Gordon reiterates Ukraine's unwavering position: "Karabakh is Azerbaijan!"

24 July 2025 09:53

Prominent Ukrainian journalist and public figure Dmytro Gordon has emphasised Ukraine’s unwavering recognition of Karabakh as an integral part of Azerbaijan, praising both the region’s natural beauty and the scale of reconstruction underway following its return to Azerbaijani control.

In an interview with the Caliber.Az YouTube channel, Gordon shared his impressions of visiting Karabakh, calling the region not only a national treasure for Azerbaijan but “a gem of global significance.”

“Karabakh is a gem not only of Azerbaijan, but of global significance,” Gordon said. “We travelled around Karabakh and saw its splendour. Allah has given you a wonderful land.”

Gordon revealed that this trip marked his first visit to Azerbaijan, despite his extensive international travels. He spoke movingly about his longtime desire to visit the country, particularly to pay his respects at the grave of legendary Azerbaijani singer Muslim Magomayev.

“I have never been to Azerbaijan, to my shame,” he admitted. “I have travelled a lot around the world, but I have never been to Azerbaijan. I dreamed of coming here, perhaps first and foremost to lay flowers on the grave of Muslim Magomayev, the great son of the Azerbaijani people, a great singer, a wonderful, amazing man.”

Gordon recalled his close friendship with Magomayev, describing it as a personal privilege: “Fate gave me the gift of friendship with him, and I simply admired the songs of the great Muslim Magomayev. I could never have imagined that I would get to communicate with him, be friends with him, and get to know this great, I repeat, person.”

Reflecting on his trip through Karabakh, Gordon expressed admiration for Azerbaijan’s comprehensive efforts to rebuild the region following years of destruction. He praised the coordinated national policies aimed at restoration and the return of displaced residents.

“Karabakh made a fantastic impression on me not only with its nature and the wonderful people I met, but also with its systematic, clear state policy to restore what had been ruthlessly destroyed,” he said.

He also underlined Ukraine’s longstanding and unequivocal support for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.

“First of all, I must say that we in Ukraine have always known, always clearly understood that Karabakh is Azerbaijan! We have never had any doubts or questions about this,” Gordon stressed. “We understand this very well, also because part of Ukraine's territory is occupied by fascist Russia.”

Gordon noted that Ukraine is closely observing Azerbaijan’s reconstruction process as a model for restoring its own occupied territories.

“We are following Azerbaijan's example, and I told President Aliyev about this,” he continued. “The impressive scale of construction, the amazing roads, the well-thought-out approach to returning people to their abandoned homes, and the meticulous restoration. It is clear that the whole of Azerbaijan is working on this. It is clear that this is a priority state program, as it should be. All this is impressive and admirable.”
