Egypt, Azerbaijan explore new phase of economic cooperation

15 June 2026 11:32

Egypt’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Ahmed Rostom and Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Cairo Elkhan Polukhov held a meeting during which they discussed economic partnership issues between the two countries.

Egypt’s Ministry of Planning and Economic Development shared the information via press release, as per Azerbaijani media.

The two sides reviewed the strengthening of bilateral cooperation, the development of economic ties, and the exchange of experience in sustainable development.

“Negotiations took place against the backdrop of the active development of Egyptian-Azerbaijani relations with the support of the presidents of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev,” the statement said.

At the beginning of the meeting, Ahmed Rostom emphasised the importance of strategic partnership between the two countries and expressed readiness to deepen cooperation with Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Economy to establish a new stage of collaboration.

He also presented Egypt’s experience in structural reforms and comprehensive development, noting the country’s ability to maintain macroeconomic stability, expand private sector participation, and attract investment. Special attention was given to digital tools used to monitor progress toward sustainable development goals.

Rostom highly praised the work of the joint Azerbaijani-Egyptian intergovernmental commission, noting that it has opened new areas of cooperation and laid the foundation for deeper economic ties.

Elkhan Polukhov stated that Baku is interested in using Egypt’s experience in infrastructure development and modern urban planning solutions. He noted that the launch of direct flights between Baku and Cairo at the beginning of the year has contributed to strengthening business contacts.

The ambassador also said that Azerbaijan is preparing to host annual meetings of the Islamic Development Bank Group and a summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, where major regional projects are expected to be discussed.

In addition, the Azerbaijani side expressed interest in applying Egypt’s experience in building “smart cities” and developing infrastructure oriented toward the “green” economy.
