Envoy: Azerbaijan seeks US help in demining

12 August 2026 15:30

Azerbaijan is seeking U.S. assistance in developing and accessing advanced technologies for landmine detection, mapping and clearance, as it works to address widespread contamination from landmines, Azerbaijani Ambassador to the United States Khazar Ibrahim told Axios.

"Azerbaijan is, if you look at per-capita, one of the most landmine-contaminated countries in the world," Ibrahim said.

"There are many, many, many technological advances in the world that can help," he said. "We hope we can work with the United States also on this issue."

Ibrahim highlighted accurate mapping as one of the key challenges facing Azerbaijan in its demining efforts.

"One of the critical things is actually having correct mapping," Ibrahim said.

Azerbaijan has been seeking to strengthen ties with the United States following its peace agreement with Armenia and a subsequent partnership agreement, with cooperation expanding into areas including artificial intelligence and energy.

"The good thing about the current U.S. administration," Ibrahim said, "is that whatever you agree upon, you immediately start working on."
