Envoy: European Union Azerbaijan's main partner in demining
EU Ambassador to Azerbaijan Peter Michalko has said that the European Union is Azerbaijan's main partner in the demining process.
"We also aim to assist Azerbaijan in the reconstruction of Karabakh. The EU is in favour of stability and peace in the South Caucasus region," the ambassador said, at a meeting with students of Lankaran State University, Report informs.
Earlier, Michalko said that European Union (EU) allocated €2.5 million for demining Azerbaijan’s Karabakh region liberated from Armenia’s 30-year occupation.
He added that the EU provided €1.5 million for humanitarian demining purposes, as well as €500,000 through UNICEF.
Armenia spared no efforts to plant land mines on Azerbaijani territory, not only during the 30 years of occupation but also just before days of leaving Azerbaijani lands as envisaged in the trilateral statement in order to cause human casualties.
Armenia deliberately and constantly planted mines on Azerbaijani territories, in violation of the 1949 Geneva Convention, thereby being a major threat to regional peace, security, and cooperation.
