Envoy: Germany, Azerbaijan plan new cooperation projects including green hydrogen

06 June 2026 13:37

Germany and Azerbaijan are preparing new joint projects to expand bilateral cooperation, including in the field of green hydrogen, Germany’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan Ralph Horlemann has said.

The ambassador told Report that energy cooperation between the two countries is growing and now extends beyond traditional sectors into areas linked to the global shift toward renewable energy.

He noted that three German energy companies have already begun purchasing Azerbaijani gas, describing it as a positive development in bilateral relations.

"On the one hand, three German energy companies have begun purchasing Azerbaijani gas, which represents a very positive development in bilateral cooperation," he said.

Horlemann added that SOCAR Green, the renewable energy arm of Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR, is also deepening cooperation with German partners.

"On the other hand, SOCAR Green, the renewable energy division of SOCAR, has found a very strong partner in Germany. New cooperation projects are already being prepared, including in the field of green hydrogen," he said.

He highlighted green hydrogen as a key component of Europe’s long-term energy transition strategy aimed at reducing carbon emissions and replacing fossil fuels with cleaner alternatives.

According to Horlemann, economic ties between Germany and Azerbaijan remain active, with projects involving private companies, universities, and business institutions, including joint education and investment initiatives.

"Germany will also actively work across the entire territory of Azerbaijan, not only in Baku. German representatives are visiting cities and regions of the country and closely cooperating with various organizations, continuing to deepen bilateral relations, including in the economic sphere," the ambassador emphasised.
