Envoy: Iran and Azerbaijan must clarify details of Nakhchivan incident
Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Mojtaba Demirchilu has said that there are various versions regarding the drone attack on Nakhchivan.
“Iran and Azerbaijan must examine this issue, clarify the details, and resolve the situation,” Demirchilu stated in an interview with Baku TV, as reported by Report News Agency.
He described the emergence of such problems between the two countries as unacceptable.
“I am also concerned, as I visited Nakhchivan 30 years ago. I am aware of the difficulties Azerbaijan faces in maintaining communication with Nakhchivan. I have seen the hardships experienced by the residents of Nakhchivan,” the ambassador said.
Following these remarks, a Baku TV journalist reminded him that a blockade has once again emerged around Nakhchivan.
The ambassador said he was aware of the situation and stressed that over the past 30 years, Iran has not displayed any hostile attitude toward Nakhchivan. Responding to a question about possible punishment for those responsible if the Iranian side had mistakenly struck Nakhchivan, the diplomat reiterated that Iran officially denies carrying out the attack.
“Therefore, bilateral work is necessary: we need the information you possess, and you need the information we have. Based on this, appropriate decisions will be made,” he added.
For his part, Turan Ibrahimov, Editor-in-Chief of Baku TV, reminded the ambassador of the speech delivered by Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan, at a meeting of the Security Council and expressed hope that once all the circumstances are fully clarified, Iran will apologise and punish those responsible.
