Envoy: Some 5,000 Azerbaijanis left Ukraine to Poland due to war

Ambassador to Poland Nargiz Gurbanova has said that 5,000 Azerbaijanis moved from Ukraine to Poland due to the ongoing war.

"According to the information we have, as a result of the war in Ukraine, about 5,000 Azerbaijani citizens crossed the Ukrainian-Polish border and moved to Poland," APA reports, quoting Gurbanova.

The ambassador noted that about half of them left Poland.

"Some of them left Poland on seven charter flights organized by Azerbaijan, and some on buses allocated as part of a project carried out under the cooperation between the Azerbaijani government and the International Organization for Migration. Some decided to stay in Poland, for the reason that one of the members of their families (wife or husband) is a citizen of Ukraine. But despite this, some of them wanted to leave for Azerbaijan even after the completion of the evacuation process. They wanted to leave with their families. Among them are those whose documents were out of order. Based on the law and official procedures, the embassy provided them with return certificates," she said.

The ambassador noted that according to the information available to the embassy, more than half of the Azerbaijani citizens who arrived in Poland from Ukraine had already been evacuated.

"Another interesting point is that about 900 Azerbaijani citizens returned to Ukraine through Poland," Gurbanova added.

She noted that another category is those who went to other EU countries.

"It is difficult to get their statistics. When we receive applications, we, as an embassy, always try to help them within the law. Sometimes we get these calls. These appeals are not numerous and are more of an advisory nature," the ambassador said.
