Erdoğan: Decision to hold congress in Baku not coincidental

29 June 2026 11:51

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said that holding events in Baku to mark the 100th anniversary of the First Turkology Congress is a significant decision, emphasising the importance of preserving shared cultural and historical ties among Turkic peoples.

In a message to participants of Turkic World Week, Erdoğan said Azerbaijan continues to play an important role in strengthening cooperation and unity across the Turkic world, Caliber.Az reports via local media

He noted that many of the issues discussed at the First Turkology Congress in 1926 remain relevant today.

"The First Turkology Congress played an important role in shaping a common sense of history, language, and culture among Turkic peoples. Preserving, strengthening, and passing on the ideals inherited from the congress to future generations is a shared responsibility of the entire Turkic world," Erdoğan said.

The Turkish leader also stressed the importance of maintaining unity and friendship among Turkic states in the modern era.

Turkic World Week is being held in Baku with a series of scientific and cultural events dedicated to the centenary of the First Turkology Congress.
