EU rep: Azerbaijan, Armenia open the way for irreversible peace

08 August 2026 21:29

The European Union has welcomed the positive and constructive steps taken by Azerbaijan and Armenia since the landmark Washington summit between the two countries’ leaders one year ago.

EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Magdalena Grono made the remarks in a post on X on August 8, marking the first anniversary of the historic summit held in Washington on August 8, 2025.

“The EU strongly welcomes the series of positive and constructive steps taken since then to further institutionalise and advance the peace process,” Grono said.

She emphasized that the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia had opened the way toward a lasting and irreversible peace.

“The Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders have opened the way for lasting and irreversible peace,” the special representative said.

According to Grono, the European Union continues to support both countries and their societies in their efforts to achieve peace and reconciliation.

The Washington summit marked a major milestone in the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process. The meeting brought Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan together at the White House, where they signed a Joint Declaration outlining a framework for advancing peace between the two countries.
