EU’s Costa thanks Azerbaijan for Iran evacuations
President of the European Council António Costa thanked Azerbaijan for assisting in the safe repatriation of European citizens from Iran, as he underscored the European Union’s intention to deepen strategic cooperation with Baku.
“I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the assistance that Azerbaijan has provided to European citizens to facilitate their safe repatriation from Iran,” Costa said during a joint press statement with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku, Caliber.Az reports via Azertag.
Highlighting a challenging geopolitical environment in the region, Costa emphasised the European Union’s full solidarity with the people of Azerbaijan.
“The Republic of Azerbaijan is a key partner for the European Union,” he said. “Over the past year, we have revitalized our relationship, and today's meeting is a clear sign of this.”
He also emphasized that the European Union intends to continue advancing cooperation in the areas of security, energy, digitalization, and transport.
With the war in Iran rattling global energy markets, Costa stressed the growing importance of the EU-Azerbaijan energy partnership.
“The European Union stands ready to mobilize private investment and financing to support Azerbaijan's energy transition. We also encourage greater involvement of European clean tech companies in your ambitious plan,” he added.
