EU to intensively monitor Georgian parliamentary elections Amid concerns over opposition ban
The European Union has announced it will conduct a thorough monitoring of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Georgia, scheduled for October 26.
This scrutiny comes in response to recent concerns raised about the electoral environment in the country, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
An EU spokesperson emphasized that the Union anticipates a competitive electoral process that adheres to international standards and genuinely reflects the preferences of the Georgian populace.
The spokesperson highlighted apprehensions regarding statements made by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and other officials from the ruling Georgian Dream party, which suggested a potential ban on opposition parties.
In response to these developments, Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili has formally decreed the date for the parliamentary elections, underscoring the significance of a transparent and democratic election procedure.
