EU working with Baku, Yerevan to advance transport links, official says

08 July 2026 14:17

The European Union is holding discussions with the governments of Azerbaijan and Armenia on ways to support the development of regional transport routes across the South Caucasus, EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Magdalena Grono said.

Speaking at a briefing in Yerevan, Grono said the EU remains committed to supporting both countries as they work toward a lasting peace, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

"The progress in building a sustainable peace in the region is incredibly impressive, and, of course, we, as the European Union, are determined to be strong partners for Armenia as well as for Azerbaijan, so that this peace becomes a lasting reality that benefits all people," she said.

Grono noted that Brussels continues to back the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process through various mechanisms, while placing particular emphasis on enhancing regional connectivity.

"We are discussing with the Armenian authorities, and of course with our Azerbaijani partners, how best to support the development of these routes so that all countries are involved, all communities located along the routes benefit from them, and, of course, so that we make a significant contribution to the EU's priority Middle Corridor project linking Asia and Europe through the South Caucasus," she said.

According to Grono, the EU views the development of regional transport infrastructure as an integral part of broader efforts to promote sustainable peace, economic cooperation, and connectivity between Asia and Europe through the South Caucasus.
