Euronews: Azerbaijani president's support for judo inspires future talents
The strong performance of Azerbaijani judokas at the Grand Slam tournament in Baku, winning two gold medals on the second day of the competition, shows the impact of President Ilham Aliyev's support and dedication to judo, Caliber.Az informs, citing a report by Euronews TV channel.
"President Ilham Aliyev's keen interest in the sport, as evidenced by his recent visit to the newly built National Training Center equipped with the latest technology, has made a significant contribution to raising the country's profile in the world of judo.
Azerbaijan is a country with a deep passion for the Japanese martial art. And the support of its leader inspires not only the current generation of judokas, but also influences future talents," the report said.
It is also reported that in the weight up to 73 kg local hero and world number one Hidayat Heydarov defeated Abubakr Sherov from Tajikistan in the final bout for his fourth gold and third home victory in a row thanks to a quick reaction.
He was awarded the medal by President of Azerbaijan Judo Federation Rashad Nabiyev.
"This is the fourth time I have won this Grand Slam, the children love me very much, and God willing, I will bring them an Olympic gold medal," Hidayat Heydarov shared his impressions after the victory.
Canada's Catherine Beauchmin-Pinard, another world-ranked athlete, also came for gold in the women's 63kg weight class.
However, after a grueling tactical fight, Lubiana Piovesana from Austria found the strength to earn an ippon and win.
The awarding ceremony was conducted by Laszlo Toth, Vice-President of the International Judo Federation.
"She's beaten me three times now, and always in bouts like this one. So I think she's a really great judoka. _She's number one in the world right now and to have her as a friend is really nice," the Austrian said after the bout.
Two former world champions, Marie-Yves Gaye and Barbara Matic, fought in the 70 kg category. The Croatian caught her opponent inattentive, earned an ippon and won the fight.
The medal was presented to the winner by Fabrice Kaken, CEO of Selerys.
The final in the 81 kg category was an Azerbaijani one: compatriots Omar Rajabli and Zelim Tskayev fought for the title.
As a result, the latter won his second victory at the Grand Slam tournament with an ippon.
The athletes received their well-deserved medals from CEDCO Hungary Chairman Michael Michaeli.
The Azerbaijan Judo Federation's "I Promise" anti-bullying campaign is underway at the tournament in Baku. More than 4,000 children, teenagers and athletes have participated.
We return to Baku on Sunday to watch the heavyweight bouts!", the reportage said.
