European Commissioner for Climate Action to visit Azerbaijan due to preparation for COP29
European Commissioner for Climate Action Wopke Hoekstra will visit Azerbaijan on June 20.
During the visit the European Commissioner will hold meetings in connection with preparation for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will be held in Azerbaijan in November 2024, the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Azerbaijan told the local media.
The meetings are planned to be held with Azerbaijani Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, COP 29 President-designate Mukhtar Babayev and members of the COP29 Presidency Team during the visit.
Hoekstra will also hold bilateral meetings with Azerbaijani Minister of Energy Parviz Shahbazov and Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov.
To recap, Baku will host the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
A group of Eastern European countries has chosen Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to host COP29 climate talks next year.
Earlier, Bulgaria withdrew its candidacy to host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in favour of Azerbaijan.
Moreover, Baku and Yerevan agreed to support each other at some international venues. In a joint statement, Armenia said it would support Azerbaijan's bid to host the COP29 summit.
The conference is being held in rotation by five UN regional groups, and Eastern Europe will take part next year.
