Ex-president Yushchenko commends Aliyev for Azerbaijan’s support for Ukraine PHOTO

Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has thanked Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and the Azerbaijani people for their support for Ukraine, humanitarian assistance and programmes to rehabilitate Ukrainian children.

Yushchenko made the remarks in a social media post about his recent visit to Baku.

He said he and Aliyev had more than 20 years of personal friendship and joint work aimed at strengthening relations between Ukraine and Azerbaijan.

Yushchenko also recalled that his friendship with the Azerbaijani people began with his meeting with national leader Heydar Aliyev in Nakhchivan in 1989.

He said an important outcome of their work had been the formal establishment of a strategic partnership between the two countries.

Yushchenko noted that a Declaration on Friendship and Strategic Partnership between Azerbaijan and Ukraine was signed in Kyiv on May 22, 2008, during Aliyev’s official visit.

The former Ukrainian president said his latest meeting with Aliyev focused on the present and future of the two countries, bilateral co-operation and specific joint projects.
