Expert: Kazakhstan keenly observes COP29 preparations in Baku

09 July 2024 09:15

Azerbaijan is a friendly nation to Kazakhstan, as evidenced by frequent high-level interactions between the two countries.

Miras Jienbayev, head of the Foreign Policy and International Studies Programme at the MIND Scientific Analytical Centre, Maqsut Narikbayev University, shared the opinion with local media, per Caliber.Az.

He highlighted that Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan have similar perspectives on the historical and modern development of the Turkic world.

"Our nations are united by a shared history and culture, as well as substantial economic prospects. Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan actively collaborate in various sectors, including energy, transport, and innovation," Jienbayev stated.

The expert expressed Kazakhstan's keen interest in the preparations for the COP29 conference in Baku, emphasizing the country's readiness to actively participate at the highest level in this significant international event.

"We are prepared to engage constructively with our Azerbaijani brothers on the agenda of this crucial event in Baku," he said.

Discussing the future of bilateral relations, Jienbayev conveyed optimism about further strengthening ties.

"We see significant and symbolic steps in the rapprochement between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. For instance, the leader of Azerbaijan personally participated in a meeting in the SCO+ format in Astana, symbolically supporting Kazakhstan. This gesture illustrates the brotherly relations and high level of bilateral dialogue between our countries," he concluded.

Azerbaijan will host the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, known also as COP29, in November 2024.

Confirmation of Azerbaijan’s COP29 host status came at the plenary session of COP28 on December 11, 2023, after Baku won collective backing from other Eastern European countries.

Baku will become the centre of the world and will receive about 70–80,000 foreign guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The COP—the Conference of the Parties—is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
