Finnish media highlights Azerbaijan's renewable energy plans ahead of COP29

22 October 2024 10:10

The Finnish newspaper Maaseudun Tulevaisuus has published an article by Azerbaijani Ambassador to Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark, Zaur Ahmadov, discussing the initiatives Azerbaijan will present at the upcoming 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), set to be held in Baku this November.

The article highlights Azerbaijan's commitment to transitioning to renewable energy sources, aiming to produce 30 per cent of its energy from renewables by 2030, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

Azerbaijan, traditionally known for its oil and gas reserves, is positioning itself as a leader in green energy, with plans to export renewable energy to Europe, further demonstrating its dedication to combating climate change.

In his article, Ahmadov also touches on the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) for climate finance, which will replace the outdated $100 billion target. He discusses Azerbaijan’s role in global initiatives such as the COP29 ceasefire and the Harmony Climate Initiative, both of which are aimed at addressing climate challenges.

The COP29 session, taking place from November 11 to 22, 2024, in Baku, is expected to draw between 70,000 and 80,000 international participants, making it a significant global event. The decision to hold COP29 in Azerbaijan was finalized during the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11, 2023.

The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), an organization established during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 to address the global climate crisis. COP29 provides a platform for Azerbaijan and other nations to showcase their contributions to climate action and to foster greater international cooperation in tackling environmental issues.
