Former Belgian PM unveils key points to combat climate change

15 March 2024 14:47

Former Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme has said that it is necessary to intensively enlighten people about combatting climate change.

Leterme made these remarks at the fifth panel discussion of the 11th Global Baku Forum, Report informs.

He noted that one of the key points to combat climate change is to increase funding.

“Time is against us. Therefore, urgent measures must be taken. The countries are already facing new challenges and problems. The countries' defence spending is increasing,” he said.

Leterme added that there are different points of view among people regarding climate change and environmental protection in different countries.

The second day of the 11th Global Baku Forum on "Fixing a Fractured World" is expected to feature panel discussions on topics such as "From Good Words to Deeds: What goals must be set for COP29?", "Financing Our Survival: Climate Justice", "Health for All" and "The Role of Regional Military and Economic Alliances".

The 11th Global Baku Forum is being held in Baku, at the Gulustan Palace, under the aegis of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and organised by the Nizami Ganjavi International Centre.

Over 350 guests from more than 70 countries are taking part in the Forum.

Scheduled to run until March 16, the forum encompasses a diverse array of discussions. These include assessments of COP28 outcomes and preparations for COP29, as well as dialogues on threats to the evolving world order, such as security concerns and prospects for peace. Additionally, discussions will focus on strategies for navigating global challenges, addressing conflicts, and confronting megatrends like climate change, food security, and nuclear safety.

Moreover, deliberations will delve into the roles of military and economic alliances in global governance, regional dynamics, relations with the European Union and neighbouring countries, youth policies, resilience-building against global challenges, as well as issues of inequality, resource scarcity, and migration. The forum will also feature discussions on emerging security paradigms, including the implications of artificial intelligence, drones, and cyber weapons.

Overall, the 11th Global Baku Forum serves as a critical platform for advancing dialogue and cooperation on multifaceted global issues, with a focus on fostering collective action and innovation in response to the complex challenges facing the international community.
