Former Georgian parliament speaker backs Azerbaijan–Armenia peace efforts

12 March 2026 09:37

Nino Burjanadze, a Georgian politician and former chairperson of the Parliament of Georgia from 2001 to 2008, said the normalisation of relations between Baku and Yerevan is of major importance for Georgia and the wider region.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the Global Baku Forum in Baku, Burjanadze said she was pleased that relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia are currently “at a completely different level.”

“I note with satisfaction that today relations are at a completely different level. I would like them to continue strengthening, to remain stable and peaceful. This will undoubtedly bring significant benefits not only to Azerbaijan and Armenia, but will also be of great importance for Georgia and the entire region,” she said.

“Therefore, I sincerely wish that these relations develop dynamically and in a spirit of peace,” Burjanadze added.

Commenting on the forum itself, she described the Global Baku Forum as a very interesting event that consistently attracts significant international attention.

“Political experience and political decisions are more important today than ever before. We greatly appreciate that Ilham Aliyev will be present at the forum. It will certainly be very interesting to listen to him, since the balanced policy pursued by Mr. Aliyev is of great importance for the region, the South Caucasus, and beyond,” she said.

Burjanadze also noted that participants are expected to discuss the complex developments currently unfolding in Iran and across the broader region.

“The world needs peace. And however difficult it may be, it is necessary to find a solution that will allow this conflict to end as soon as possible,” she added.
