France briefs Germany ahead of Macron’s call with Putin
The French government notified the German federal government before President Emmanuel Macron held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, officials have confirmed.
"We were informed by the French side and also briefed afterwards on the outcome," Caliber.Az quotes German government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius per n-tv.
The discussion between the two leaders focused on Iran’s nuclear programme.
However, Kornelius added, "We are not evaluating the initiative in detail."
Chancellor Friedrich Merz currently has no plans to engage directly with President Putin.
French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a significant two-hour phone call on July 1, 2025—their first direct conversation since September 2022. The discussion focused on the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran.
Macron advocated for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and the resumption of peace negotiations. He coordinated this outreach by consulting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and briefing U.S. President Donald Trump before and after the call.
In response, Putin emphasized Iran's right to peaceful nuclear development and adherence to nonproliferation commitments, while Macron stressed full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency amid heightened tensions caused by recent Israeli and U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
