From Prague to NATO: Global leaders applaud Armenia–Azerbaijan peace pact

09 August 2025 16:23

The landmark peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, signed at the White House in the presence of US President Donald Trump on August 8, has drawn swift praise from governments and international organisations, with many hailing it as a turning point for stability in the South Caucasus.

The Czech Foreign Ministry said it welcomed “the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the end of decades of conflict,” Caliber.Az reports per the ministry’s statement on X.

“We appreciate the peace efforts of both sides and President Trump. We hope this step will pave the way for further cooperation and prosperity in the South Caucasus,” the Foreign Ministry wrote.

Italy’s Foreign Ministry described the accord as “historic,” calling it “a step towards normalisation based on sovereignty and territorial integrity.” The statement also expressed gratitude to the United States for its mediation, saying the deal was “an opportunity for peace, stability and development in the region.”

Cyprus hailed the “groundbreaking Armenia–Azerbaijan Peace Treaty” and congratulated both Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and President Ilham Aliyev for taking the historic step.

“This agreement creates momentum and great prospects for lasting peace and true prosperity in the region, in full respect of the normalisation process and based on mutual recognition of sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of borders,” the Foreign Ministry said. It also commended President Trump’s “instrumental role” in making the deal a reality.

Echoing the message, Romanian Foreign Minister Toiu Oana also welcomed the initialing of the peace treaty.

“This is a crucial step in achieving lasting peace, stability and prosperity in the South Caucasus. Romania supports full normalisation of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan," she wrote on X.

NATO also voiced its support, with spokesperson Allison Hart welcoming the progress towards peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“This is a significant step forward for the normalisation process and for regional security more broadly. NATO will continue to work with our partners Armenia and Azerbaijan,” she added.
