UK reaffirms backing for South Caucasus peace on Washington Summit anniversary

The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its support for efforts to achieve lasting peace in the South Caucasus, marking the first anniversary of the Washington Summit held on August 8, 2025.

In a statement, cited by Caliber.Az, the British Embassy in Azerbaijan highlighted the significance of the agreements reached during the summit, which brought together Ilham Aliyev, Donald Trump and Nikol Pashinyan.

“On the first anniversary of the agreements reached at the Washington Summit, we recognise the political leadership shown in taking a historic step towards peace,” the statement reads.

The embassy stressed that sustained dialogue and cooperation remain essential to ensuring long-term stability and prosperity in the region.

“The UK remains committed to supporting efforts towards a durable and lasting peace,” the statement said.

The Washington meeting is widely regarded as a major milestone in the normalisation of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. During the summit, the three leaders signed a Joint Declaration outlining progress toward a comprehensive peace framework.

According to the declaration, Aliyev, Pashinyan and Trump witnessed the initialling of the agreed text of the Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia by their respective foreign ministers. 

The Joint Declaration reaffirmed the parties’ commitment to advancing the peace process and to building bilateral relations based on the principles of international law.
