FT: Russia steps up offensive in Donetsk
Russian forces have intensified their offensive operations in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, focusing on the strategic city of Pokrovsk, according to information by the Financial Times. The escalation comes amid the failure of US President Donald Trump’s recent peace initiatives.
Citing unnamed sources, the FT reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered military commanders to seize control of Pokrovsk by mid-November 2025. Some Russian units have reportedly entered parts of the city, though Ukrainian officials deny claims that their forces have been completely encircled.
The Ukrainian General Staff confirmed that around 200 Russian troops are operating within Pokrovsk, where fierce street fighting continues. The military said combat is ongoing both on the city’s outskirts and inside its residential districts, with Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance units attempting to repel Russian advances.
Pokrovsk, once a key transport and logistics hub in Donetsk region, is considered strategically vital. Analysts warn that its capture could deal a significant blow to Ukraine’s defensive posture and open new routes for further Russian advances westward.
Heavy fighting has also been reported along other sections of the roughly 1,000-kilometer front line, including near Lyman and Kostiantynivka. Ukrainian officials say Russian forces are attempting to cut supply lines using drones and precision strikes on key roads.
The offensive in the Donetsk region has been underway for several months, with Moscow’s troops making gradual gains despite stiff Ukrainian resistance and widespread infrastructure damage that has complicated logistics for both sides.
