Georgia reveals timeline for entry into force of foreign agents law
Givi Mikanadze, Head of the Parliamentary Committee on Education, Science, and Youth Affairs of Georgia, has disclosed that Georgia's law on foreign agents, passed in May, is set to come into effect within the next few weeks.
"Approximately in a few weeks this law will become effective and we will see how the processes will develop," Mikanadze emphasized, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
The law, passed on May 14 in its final third reading, received mixed reactions within Georgia's Parliament. Despite opposition and abstentions, it was supported by 84 MPs, while 30 voted against it, and 58 abstained. President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili vetoed the legislation, labeling it a "Russian law" that contradicts the constitution and European standards. Despite criticism from the EU and the US, the Georgian parliament overrode the presidential veto, leading to the law's final adoption.
Earlier statements from Georgian officials indicated that Western sanctions did not meet Tbilisi's expectations.
