Germany’s interior minister calls for stronger drone protection for Bundestag
Germany’s Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has called for permanent protection of the Bundestag against drone threats, Euronews reports.
Dobrindt said the risk of potential drone attacks on the Bundestag and other constitutional institutions has increased in recent months.
In a letter addressed to Bundestag President Julia Klöckner, he urged the creation of a permanently operational anti-drone system to safeguard key state institutions.
“Protecting the constitutional bodies is of particular importance in light of the current threat environment,” Dobrindt wrote.
The rise in drone sightings over recent months has made security services increasingly alert.
The letter was prompted by a request from Klöckner sent in December, in which she asked to what extent a new federal police unit specialising in counter-drone operations could be deployed to protect parliament.
In his response, Dobrindt clarified that the unit could provide temporary support within the framework of administrative assistance.
