Historic first: Aghdam monuments enter Islamic World Heritage List PHOTO
For the first time in history, monuments in Aghdam have been recognized on an international stage. The 13th session of the Heritage Committee in the Islamic World, held under ICESCO, has officially added key Azerbaijani sites to the Islamic World Heritage List, marking a major milestone in the preservation of the region’s cultural and architectural legacy.
On the opening day of the session, nominations for inclusion in the Islamic World Heritage List and the Preliminary List of Islamic World Heritage were reviewed, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
The Committee approved the inclusion of two Azerbaijani sites: the Historical and Architectural Museum Complex “Imaret” in Aghdam and the State Reserve of the City of Shusha. Both nominations were prepared by Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Culture.

This decision marks a historic milestone, as it is the first time that monuments in Aghdam have been recognized on international cultural heritage lists, highlighting the region’s architectural and historical significance.
The 13th Session of the Heritage Committee in the Islamic World, held under the auspices of ICESCO, got underway in Tashkent. The event will run until February 13, bringing together experts and officials to discuss the preservation and promotion of Islamic world heritage across member states.
