Hungary's policy changes spark EU concerns Amid diplomatic tensions

10 August 2024 12:35

Hungary, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has frequently clashed with its European neighbors, including blocking Ukrainian aid and Russian sanctions, delaying NATO accessions, and disregarding EU asylum regulations.

These disputes have helped Budapest secure funds previously frozen by the EU over rule of law and corruption issues. Recently, Hungary's assumption of the EU presidency saw Orbán's controversial visits to Moscow and Beijing, stirring criticism from EU leaders, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

More troubling for Europe, however, is Hungary's recent expansion of its National Card scheme to include Russian and Belarusian citizens, granting them work rights and freedom of movement within the Schengen area with minimal security checks. This policy change has alarmed EU officials, with concerns raised about potential espionage risks.

European leaders are urging urgent action, including possible measures against Hungary if it does not address these security issues. Former Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves and other critics argue that Hungary’s actions could facilitate espionage and sabotage, exacerbating current tensions. The EU’s response, including potential suspension from the Schengen zone or invoking Article 7, remains uncertain amid the complexities of EU bureaucracy and Hungary’s ongoing presidency.
