Institute: Armenia subjected to genocide over 15,000 Azerbaijani toponyms PHOTO

31 March 2023 15:17

In mid-19th century, 1,750 of 2,310 Azerbaijani settlements on the territory of present-day Armenia were subjected to toponymic genocide.

According to Report, it is stated in the recently published publication of the Institute of Geography named after Academician Hasan Aliyev under the Ministry of Science and Education about Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur.

During the studies, it was found that over the past 200 years, about 1000 villages inhabited by Azerbaijanis were completely destroyed and two million of our compatriots were killed.

“Starting from the 30s of the 20th century, Armenian nationalists in Western Azerbaijan, in the occupied territories and on maps, began to massively change and Armenize geographical names of Azerbaijani-Turkic origin. In general, over 15,000 geographical names (toponyms) of Turkic etymology were subjected to toponymic genocide. Toponymic studies prove that the toponymy of the current territory of Armenia was part of the toponymy of Azerbaijan and is an element of the general Turkic toponymy,” the study of the Institute of Geography says.

It was noted that in the period after 1905, the Armenians started an undeclared war seven times to achieve their main goal (destruction of Azerbaijanis, conquest of their territories by expulsion): 1) 1905-1906; 2) 1914-1917; 3) 1918; 4) May-June 1919; 5) end of 1920; 6) 1988-1993; 7) September-November 2020.
