International conference on Bonaire Island starts in Baku

An international conference on the situation on the island of Bonaire, which is part of the Netherlands but seeks self-determination, has started in Baku.

The conference entitled “The Path of Self-Determination of the Island of Bonaire through the UN General Assembly in Baku” is being jointly organised by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) and the Bonaire Movement for Human Rights and Change, Caliber.Az informs, citing local media.

The conference is attended by officials and officials of regional organisations, human rights defenders, leaders of non-governmental organisations, experts and researchers on decolonisation and others.

Additionally, the conference will feature speeches from the Special Representative of the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the Permanent Representative of Belize to the UN, the UNICEF Youth Envoy, the Youth Ambassador of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Chair of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, and other high-ranking officials.

The conference will discuss the struggle of the people of Bonaire for liberation from Dutch colonial rule, and the work being done to put the issue on the agenda of relevant international organisations.
