Investigation into AZAL plane crash points to external factors, minister says

27 December 2024 18:29

Azerbaijan's Minister of Digital Development and Transport, Rashad Nabiyev, has suggested that the crash of the Embraer 190 aircraft belonging to Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) may have been the result of external interference, citing visible damage to the aircraft's wing and testimonies from survivors.

Speaking to journalists, Nabiyev explained that the wreckage and witness accounts provide evidence pointing to the possibility of outside factors impacting the flight, Caliber.Az reports citing local media.

"The wreckage of the aircraft and testimonies from witnesses give grounds to say that the airliner was subjected to outside interference," he stated.

Following the crash, which occurred while the plane was en route from Baku to Grozny, President Ilham Aliyev ordered to set up an investigative commission. Members of the commission were dispatched to Aktau to gather information, examine the crash site, and speak with survivors.

According to the minister, the survivors and injured passengers reported hearing an explosion while the aircraft was over Grozny. One flight attendant was reportedly injured in the arm during the incident, and other passengers, including a woman, were seen with injuries on social media and video footage circulating in the media.

Additionally, Nabiyev highlighted that "holes were seen on the wing of the aircraft," reinforcing the theory of possible external interference.

The Azerbaijani government, in line with its rights, has involved international consultants in the investigation, with contacts already established. The minister confirmed that two Embraer specialists are part of the investigation team and are currently on the ground. Brazilian experts are also expected to arrive at the crash site shortly.

Addressing the claims made by Kazakh officials, who suggested that the explosion of an oxygen tank on board had been reported by a flight dispatcher in Rostov, Nabiyev stressed the importance of verifying the reliability of this information. "This is information provided by an interested party," he said, adding that the explosion sounds heard during the flight seemed to come from outside the aircraft, further contradicting the oxygen tank theory.
