Iran calls for suspension of Israel’s UN membership over violations of international law
Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Saeed Iravani has urged the global community to take decisive action against Israel for what he described as "blatant violations" of the UN Charter and international law.
Iravani’s remarks came during an informal UN General Assembly meeting, convened to discuss the operations of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Caliber.Az reports, citing Iran media.
In his address, Iravani expressed Iran's deep concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis faced by Palestinian refugees, particularly those in Gaza. He accused Israel of “genocidal acts” and using starvation as a weapon through its ongoing blockade, which he claims is endangering thousands of Palestinian civilians, including women and children.
The Iranian diplomat condemned Israel’s recent ban on UNRWA, calling it an attempt to deny essential services, including education, healthcare, and humanitarian aid, to Palestinian refugees. He emphasized that UNRWA remains the sole agency providing crucial humanitarian assistance to these populations amid mounting hostilities.
Iravani called on Israel to meet its obligations under international law, urging it to permit the free flow of humanitarian aid into Palestinian territories. He further demanded that the international community prioritize the protection of Palestinian refugees and UNRWA’s ability to operate.
Iran has advocated for Israel’s suspension from the UN General Assembly, citing “genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity” as grounds for the move. Iravani highlighted the necessity of holding Israel accountable for its actions, which he claimed threaten global peace and security. He also reiterated Iran’s support for UNRWA, calling for "urgent and decisive action" to address the crisis and ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those in need.
The Iranian ambassador concluded by emphasizing the need for international pressure on Israel to adhere to international law, warning that continued aggression will pose an ongoing risk to global stability.
