Iran launches major military drills to boost defence readiness

12 June 2025 15:08

Iran has commenced a new round of large-scale military exercises under the title "Drills of Authority," aimed at boosting the country’s defence capabilities and readiness.

Iranian Armed Forces Chief of General Staff Major General Mohammad Bagheri issued the directive to launch the 2025 series of military drills, Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media.

The operations began with the code phrase "Ya Ali ibn Abi Talib (PBUH)," according to Iranian state media.

General Bagheri stated that the exercises are intended to reinforce the armed forces’ defensive strength, operational preparedness and deterrence posture.

This year’s manoeuvres have been scheduled outside the traditional military calendar and, officials say, have been tailored to reflect shifting regional dynamics and perceived threats.

As a reminder, on June 11, Britain's maritime agency warned that rising tensions in the Middle East could trigger military activity impacting key shipping routes.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said it was "aware of increased tensions in the Middle East which could lead to an escalation of military activity having a direct impact on mariners," urging vessels to exercise caution in the Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and Straits of Hormuz.

The warning comes as the U.S. and Iran prepare for nuclear talks, with Washington threatening military action if talks fail and Tehran vowing to strike U.S. bases if conflict breaks out.

“Israel-affiliated merchant shipping is assessed to be at heightened risk of reciprocal military action,” said British security firm Ambrey, adding that U.S. support for Israeli operations could increase risks to U.S. shipping.

"Any attack will have a certain potential to escalate and impact shipping," said Jakob Larsen of BIMCO. “A full-blown armed conflict… would most certainly effectively close the Straits of Hormuz… and drive up oil prices.”
