Iran’s security chief accuses Trump, Netanyahu of leading “killers of Iranian people”

14 January 2026 11:18

Iran’s Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, has issued a sharp response to a recent Truth Social post by U.S. President Donald Trump, who called on Iranians to remember the names of those responsible for killing protesters.

According to Iran International, in his statement, Larijani wrote: “We are announcing the names of the main killers of the Iranian people: 1. Trump. 2. Netanyahu.”

Larijani’s remark appeared to be a direct reaction to Trump’s announcement earlier on Tuesday that he had cancelled all meetings with Iranian officials due to the ongoing violent suppression of demonstrations across the country.

"Iranian Patriots, KEEP PROTESTING - TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!! Save the names of the killers and abusers. They will pay a big price. I have cancelled all meetings with Iranian Officials until the senseless killing of protesters STOPS. HELP IS ON ITS WAY. MIGA!!!" Trump wrote.

The protests, which erupted in late December 2025 following a sharp devaluation of the national currency and surging retail prices, have since widened into broader expressions of anger over economic hardship and demands for the downfall of the clerical leadership. In several cities, the unrest has escalated into violent confrontations between demonstrators and security forces, leaving hundreds dead.

Information emerging from Iran on January 13 suggests that the authorities’ crackdown on nationwide anti-government protests may have resulted in at least 12,000 deaths, far exceeding previously reported figures.

Multiple sources, including one inside Iran, told CBS News that activist groups compiling data from hospitals and medical officials across the country believe the death toll has reached a minimum of 12,000, with some estimates placing the figure even higher. The claims have not been independently verified, but sources say the real number is likely underreported due to severe communication restrictions imposed by the authorities.

The current wave of demonstrations is viewed by analysts as the most serious internal challenge the Iranian government has faced in at least three years. It comes at a moment of rising external pressure following Israeli and US strikes last year.

Amid the turmoil, Trump has announced 25% import tariffs on goods from countries that continue trading with Iran and has signalled that military options remain under consideration. China criticised the tariff move, while Tehran has not yet issued a formal response.
