Iran signals readiness to resume sanctions talks with US

21 January 2025 22:16

Tehran has reiterated its readiness to resume negotiations with the United States regarding sanctions relief, contingent on mutual interest.

Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi highlighted Iran’s commitment to dialogue but cautioned that its position would depend on the approach taken by Washington, Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media.

"Iran, as before, is ready to begin and resume negotiations for sanctions relief. We have always been prepared for this, and if the other parties are equally willing, talks will occur and produce results," Gharibabadi told reporters. "If the other parties adopt a different policy or approach, Iran will adjust its stance accordingly. There are appropriate opportunities and grounds for resuming talks and reaching an agreement."

The Deputy Minister emphasized the need for constructive dialogue and criticized unilateral sanctions for their ineffectiveness. "The most rational path is to initiate sanctions relief talks. Everyone knows Iran's nuclear program is peaceful, and unilateral and illegal sanctions have failed to achieve their objectives. While we do not deny that sanctions impact people's lives, their clear goal of creating other changes in sanctioned countries has not been achieved. We must return to the right and proper path of dialogue," Gharibabadi asserted.

He further addressed Iran’s willingness to engage with European partners. "We have agreed to continue dialogue with Europe. The date for these discussions will be determined through further consultations," he said.

Amid these statements, Gharibabadi underscored Iran’s openness to restoring the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) but stipulated that this could only occur if all parties, including the European Union and the United States, adhered fully to the agreement. He warned that any actions by Washington aimed at increasing sanctions pressure would be viewed as violations of international law.

Meanwhile, Iran is strengthening ties with allies such as Russia and China to counter the economic impact of sanctions. Tehran believes that adopting a multipolar approach to international relations is key to resisting U.S. pressure.

International analysts have speculated that the potential return of Donald Trump to power could complicate negotiations, citing his historically hardline stance on Iran.
