Israeli FM honours Jewish hero in Baku’s Alley of Martyrs Photo

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar visited Azerbaijan's Victory Park and the Alley of Martyrs in Baku on January 26. 

During the visit, the foreign minister paid tribute to the memory of Albert Aqarunov, a Jewish tank officer who was killed during the First Karabakh War,  Caliber.Az reports. 

Aqarunov, recognised posthumously as a National Hero of Azerbaijan, is buried in the Alley of Martyrs, which commemorates those who fell in the Karabakh conflicts and the victims of “Black January.”

Sa’ar laid a wreath on Aqarunov’s grave, noting the soldier’s heroism and Azerbaijan’s multicultural heritage. The soldier’s funeral had previously included both Muslim clerics and rabbis, symbolising the country’s religious diversity.

“May his memory be a blessing,” Sa’ar wrote on his Facebook page.
